Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines

To provide an enriching selection of talks on maritime heroes for passengers on a cruise to north European cities

  • Public Speaking

As Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines' Black Watch sailed from Newcastle to Amsterdam, through the Kiel Canal to Copenhagen, and then on to Oslo, passengers were offered a range of enrichments and entertainments.

VIP guest speaker Sir Arnold Wolfendale, 14th Astronomer Royal, and Professor of Physics at the University of Durham, regaled audiences with lively tales of his long and fascinating career, and occasionally blinded everyone with science.

Fellow speaker Cathy Shelbourne, from Sea Shell Communications, presented a series of talks on maritime heroes - including Admiral Lord Nelson, his protege Sir William Hoste, and the notorious Captain William Bligh, of the Bounty. Was Bligh responsible for the mutiny, or were the sailors led astray by the dastardly Fletcher Christian? Members of the audience loyal to the many mutiny films were hopefully persuaded to a more rational view by Cathy's presentation!

Black Watch passengers sailed the very same waters as Nelson, who fought and won the Battle of Copenhagen in 1801. The wonderful Royal Danish Naval Museum in Copenhagen has an excellent model of the battle, and naval medals, as well as superb collections of figureheads and paintings.

Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines were voted 'Best for Enrichment' for the second time in the 'Cruise International Awards' in September 2014.

Cathy is an experienced enrichment speaker, represented by the Peel Agency. Her full profile can be viewed on their website. Contact Cathy for a full list of talks on maritime heroes and bold buccaneers.

Her most recent series of cruise talks, en route for Madeira, Antigua, St Kitts, St Lucia and Barbados in December 2017, included one on the Pirates of the Caribbean! Cathy travels widely to enhance her presentations so that she can link local places with her globe-trotting seafarers - and ships. The most recent addition to her subjects is the Cutty Sark.

Cathy is also on the Womens' Institute panel of speakers. Her most popular talk is on Nelson and his Suffolk connections. Other local subjects include Thomas Cavendish from Trimley St Martin, the first Englishman to set out to circumnavigate the world; and Philip Broke of Nacton, who won the shortest sea battle ever.
