Cathy Shelbourne's articles on Admiral Sir Philip Broke (from Suffolk) and Sir William Hoste (from Norfolk) celebrate these two seafaring heroes whose actions off the coast of Massachusetts (in 1813 - the last time that America and England were at war with each other) and in 1814 in the Adriatic, turned the tide of history.

In tracing their campaigns, she highlights many of the places you can visit  today to appreciate the extent of their bravery and boldness.

For a really close up experience, the yacht Monty B, offering daily sailing trips in the summer from their base in Kotor, Montenegro, will be pointing out where the action took place between the French and English.

And a free factsheet is available from  Montenegro Apartments with detailed information on what happened where, and how to access the mountains and fortifications. Contact stay@montenegroapartment.eu Their 4-star apartments in the waterfront village of Orahovac enjoy fantastic views over the seas that Hoste sailed to relieve the siege of Kotor (then known as Cattaro), and across to the mountain that he and his men took six days to haul an 18 pounder cannon up.

For more information on Admiral Broke, see the book Broke of the Shannon, edited by Tim Voelcker, and the Broke Symposium, organised by the Ipswich Maritime Trust.
